New Orleans Comes Alive
On Mardi Gras morning the city of New Orleans awakens early for a day of costumed revelry. In the Tremé neighborhood, a brilliantly plumed and beaded Mardi Gras Indian dances in the street, while members of the North Side Skull and Bones Gang congregate at the Backstreet Cultural Museum. Over in the Bywater neighborhood, the Societé de Sainte Anne draws together merrymakers bedecked in a dazzling array of otherworldly costumes who parade toward the French Quarter to the beat of a brass band.
