PHOTOGRAPHY INTERN

Position Summary

Traveler magazine is seeking an intern to assist with office projects related to the visual side of the magazine and photo research. Duties also include routing photography materials, learning the insides of magazine production and conducting photo research on future story assignments. Interns will gain an understanding of the way the photo, design and editorial departments work together to produce the magazine.

Job Type

Academic internship, full-time. Offered three times a year to coincide with the spring, summer, and fall semesters.

Responsibilities

- Provide support for the department staff. These duties include data input using FileMakerPro, filing records, photocopying, organizing files, and mailing and tracking packages.
- Assist with cataloguing, organizing, tracking and returning stock photo submissions and photo assignments.
- Assist with preparing files in Photoshop for the Traveler website.
- Assist with stock photo research on future story assignments.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

Intern must be working towards a college degree. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, acute attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as required. Familiarity with digital photography and file types a plus. Experience with Photoshop, Bridge, iViewMediaPro preferred. Previous photo editing experience through former internships, college courses and/or work on school publications a plus. Demonstrates a love of travel.

RESEARCH INTERN

Position Summary

Open to graduate students and juniors and seniors in college.
- The internship is full time, unpaid. Interns must arrange to receive college credit from their college or university.
- Academic interns are listed on the masthead as editorial assistants.
- Interns are relied upon to do professional, efficient work, mostly in story research, fact-checking, and planning. Interns are included in story-planning sessions and photo and layout reviews.

Responsibilities

- Pre-story research (fleshing out story ideas).
- Research and fact checking for the print magazine.
- Research, fact checking and writing for blog and website.
- Compiling information from our foreign editions.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

Most successful candidates come to us with a journalism background or publication experience that involved reporting, such as on campus newspapers or magazines. Familiarity with journalistic writing conventions, such as handling attribution, is required.

WEB INTERN

Position Summary

National Geographic Traveler magazine is seeking an intern to assist with the production of the magazine’s website. Duties include programming pages for the site, sizing photographs, and assisting the online editor with various editorial tasks. Interns will gain an understanding of the way the photo, design, and editorial departments work together to produce the website and learn how the production process works.

Responsibilities

- Provide assistance to the online editor. These duties include creating XML documents, data input using HTML, and preparing photographic files for online usage.
- Copyedit and make changes to Web text.
- Help develop ideas for the website.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

A mature, organized, and enthusiastic undergraduate or graduate student studying journalism, new media, or other related major. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, acute attention to detail, and the ability to work independently is required. Computer savvy (knowledge of XML, HTML, and Photoshop), with no fear of learning new programs.

EDITORIAL MARKETING INTERN

Position Summary

Primary duty is to assist the Director of Editorial Marketing with event planning details on Traveler Photography Seminars, including planning, project development, site selection, working with seminars speakers, tracking expenses, tracking local media coverage, and shipping materials.

Open to graduate students and juniors and seniors in college. Best candidates would be those majoring in business, publications, media relations, or event planning academic programs.

EDITORIAL BUSINESS INTERN

Position Summary

The Editorial Business Intern will learn about the business side of producing a magazine, while assisting in the day-to-day operations of the editorial department of Traveler magazine. Responsibilities will primarily focus on rights clearance and contract management.

Responsibilities

- Photography Rights Clearance: includes sending and tracking permission forms, maintain contract files, updating database with clearance status.
- Contract Management: Processing outgoing and incoming assignment contracts for writer photographers and illustrators; maintaining records of sent/received contracts; routing contracts for signatures; distributing copies of fully executed contracts.
- Magazine layout process: maintaining magazine layout book and ensuring accuracy of photo information in the department's Filemaker pro database.
- Records Management: filing and other miscellaneous administrative tasks.
- Miscellaneous projects such as editorial research and fact-checking, attending NG Learning Lab classes.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

- Candidates should be college/university students who are studying journalism or business.
- Successful candidate must be highly organized and detail oriented, with strong interpersonal and written communications skills.
- Experience with Filemaker Pro or other database software a plus.
